Evaluating a Deep Freeze alternative? vDisk combines centrally managed system images with local desktop execution and restore policies. Start with your lab's software, hardware and data-retention needs, then verify the workflow in a pilot.
Faronics Deep Freeze is a reboot-to-restore product, and its Enterprise edition also provides central management. An alternative should be evaluated against the edition and configuration you actually use, rather than assuming all restore products have the same capabilities.
vDisk is an IDV/VOI image and virtual-disk management platform developed by Shanghai Chengcheng Information Technology. It brings image preparation, distribution and terminal management into a shared workflow. It is worth evaluating when your requirements include centrally maintained course images and desktops that run on local hardware.

Prepare a course image, test its applications and drivers, then distribute it to a pilot group. Verify download completion and the intended image version before switching the rest of the lab.
Decide which desktops should discard session changes and which data must be retained. Check that the configured restore policy resets the intended system state without removing work that should be saved.
IDV/VOI desktops use local terminal resources. Offline startup requires a fully cached image and a supported local boot configuration. Network services, application licences and classroom features may still require connectivity.
| Requirement | What to test in your lab |
|---|---|
| Course software and hardware | Run your applications, peripherals and licensing tools on representative terminals. |
| Image distribution | Test the selected download mode, an interrupted download, and completion before activation. |
| System restore | Change settings and install test software, restart under the intended policy, and check the resulting state. |
| Saved student work | Verify the destination and retention of files separately from system restore. |
| Offline startup | With a fully cached image, test local startup and identify which course services still need the network. |
| Rollback and migration | Back up the current environment, test a rollback, and schedule deployment around classes. |
Record the results using your own image, terminal hardware and network. Startup time, update speed and compatibility depend on these conditions; this page does not promise a fixed performance result.
System restore and classroom teaching serve different purposes. If you also need screen broadcasting, student monitoring, remote control or file distribution, evaluate cc-class alongside the desktop workflow. Confirm support for the operating systems and network conditions in your classroom.
